Trying Something New - PicoArmor

A couple of years ago I purchased some PicoArmor for a change of pace.  It's crazy small (I thought GHQ was small) and it's a very affordable Wargaming option.  This weekend I painted up a few using only a paintbrush and non-toxic paints (inlcuding matte varnish).

I'm excited to paint a few more and maybe even build a small army.  Let me know what you think.

One more picture...  excuse the poor lighting.  This is a great benefit of small miniatures; a full 4' x 6' game board (scaled down of course) on a single 1' x 2' Styrofoam sheet.

  1. These look great. Any advice on how you painted them? Recently, I picked up a sample pack of the early 80s modern armor and infantry because they intrigued my son and I so much.

  2. Thanks :)

Here are the basic steps I used:

    1. brushed on a primer (I use Vallejo Polyurethane)
    2. brushed on a basecoat (Vallejo Iraqi Sand)
    3. lightened the base color with white and highlighted the panels and details
    4. highlighted the small details (gun barrels, bolts, hatches, etc.) with Vallejo Pale Sand
    5. Brushed on Vallejo Matte Varnish

I did put down a black/brown wash using the Flames of War washes from the Auxiliary paint set.

I hope that helps. Good luck! I purchased these because my son has no chance of bending the barrels (unlike GHQ).

  4. WoW! Thats small! Nice job on the camo!

These would be good for, say gluing to cardboard wargame counters and such or gaming divisional scale.

  8. I have a bunch of these just lying around, Ive made an Italian diorama so far I cannot seem to get good definition like you did on these, at what step did you apply the washes?

    1. I added the wash between step 2 and 3. Although if you look at the KV-2's in the last photo, I didn't use a wash at all. I think the key is to make your highlights just light enough that it doesn't look weird, but yet it stands out.

      Good luck!

  10. Thanks a ton, I am still testing different methods but the one you use seems to work the best on something this small, by the way what vallejo color is that green used on the camo?

    1. I believe it's Vallejo Reflective Green (#890).

    2. And... I lightened it with white and highlighted the center of the camo pattern.
